The Ria Formosa is a lagoon system protected from the ocean by a dune barrier formed by two peninsulas and five barrier islands, which shelter a vast area of salt marshes, channels, and islets. This environment, composed of a wide variety of ecosystems, including halophytic plants and seagrass meadows, has great economic and environmental value thanks to its provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural services.
