Module 26
Flying
1 - Stand at the edge of one of the mirrors.
2 - Lift the foot you see in the mirror and observe what happens!
One of nature’s most important properties is symmetry!
Many objects have a regularity that gives them a similar appearance when reflected in a mirror or viewed from another angle. The human body is approximately symmetrical between the left and right sides. These are geometric symmetries, the easiest to identify.
This exhibit consists of two flat mirrors placed vertically so that you can stand at their free edge. When you lean against the edge of one of the mirrors, showing only half your body, your complete image appears. This happens because the mirror “completes” the missing half. You thus obtain a perfectly symmetrical image of your body!
If you stand at the edge of one mirror and lift your foot, it seems like you’re floating in the air (try to explain why). If you move your lifted foot and hand, it really looks like you’re flying. Ask a friend to do the same behind you — it seems like you have more than two arms and two legs!
