On display.
You're looking at plastic diatoms!
Diatoms are unicellular eukaryotic algae and are responsible for about one-fifth of the planet's photosynthesis. They are ubiquitous (found in all types of environments) and have been a source of inspiration for scientists, doctors, botanists, and teachers from the 19th century to the present day!
Did you know...
The enormous biodiversity of this group, combined with the massive biomass they collectively represent and their photosynthetic capacity, makes diatoms one of the most important biological groups on the planet. They form a substantial part of the base of oceanic food chains.
